Preservation activities aim to minimise the physical and chemical deterioration of records and to prevent the loss of information. The department is making earnest efforts to ensure longevity to documents in its custody through preventive, curative and restorative measures. The records which are in the form of files, books, volumes, manuscripts, maps and photographs are stored as per scientific and archival standards. The stack area is well equipped with state of the art fire-fighting system and controlled temperature. To conserve records for posterity, the department is using various techniques of conservation.

To maximise the life of archival records, there is need to :

  • Handle carefully
  • Store appropriately
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperature and relative humidity
  • Avoid exposure to light
  • Avoid exposure to dust and other pollutants
  • Avoid amateur repairs
